The city of Pisa is only a 1.5 hour train ride away! Perfect for a day trip from Cinque Terre. Tickets are about 20 euro/person roundtrip.
If you end up flying into Rome, then you know that Rome is about 5-6 hours from Cinque Terre. I wouldn't recommend it for a day trip obviously, but if you have extra time to spend in Rome, I highly recommend it. It was one of our favorite places we've ever been! Tickets are anywhere form 30 euro - 50 euro per person, one-way depending on which type of "cart" you want to be in.
Florence would be another recommendation we have if you are looking for places to go in Italy! It's about 3 hours away from Cinque Terre, so you could see it in a day if you really wanted to, but know that it will be a long one! If you love handbags or leather, i'd recommend making a pit stop in Florence to get some great deals at their leather market! Great quality and beautiful items for a great price! Tickets are about 15 euro/ person one way.
Said to be one of the most beautiful places in Italy, Portofino is only an hour train ride away from La Spezia (train station near Cinque Terre). Perfect for a day trip! Train tickets are about 20 euro/ person roundtrip.
Milan, fashion capital of the world, is a 3.5 hour trip away-- Train tickets are around 30 euro/ person roundtrip.
One of the best activities we've heard you can do, is a boat tour of the 5 cities (I get sea-sick, so I will not be participating in this event), It's a 2 and 1/2 hour tour, for 60 euro a person. For the time of the year we will be there, here is the schedule: Departure from Manarola -View of the whole Cinqueterre bay from the sea -View of all the 5 towns from the sea -2 stops for swimming and snorkelling in places accessible only by a private boat -View of Via Dell'Amore from the sea -Free drinks on board. -Arrive in Manarola
