Sherene & Alex attended NYC College of Technology (aka City Tech) where they met on the basketball court of the college gym. Sherene was a member of the basketball team. However, Sherene eventually quit playing for the basketball team but continued working in the gym as part of the Work Study program. Alex was also a member of the basketball team. Thus, their paths would cross eventually as they were always in the gym. Queue the day we officially met! Sherene was finishing her shift and putting equipment away while Alex was jumping rope one day. She's a child at heart so she thought it would be fun to jump with him. She jumped in, he thought it was flirting (she denies it). After that day, Alex would look forward to the days when she was working so he can say hi. One day Alex “worked up the courage” to ask Sherene for her phone number. She (allegedly) was hesitant at first but gave it to him and their friendship started.
Aight so boom, Alex & Sherene finally started dating after a few years of being friends! Alex was persistent and for that Sherene is grateful. Before starting a new school year Alex and Sherene went on a date. They had food, walked and ended the night at the Top of the Rockefeller Center where Alex asked her to be his girlfriend. They had tough times but made it through. During their time together they have watched each other grow in many ways. They began their careers in public accounting & education, eagerly travelled to multiple countries, and eventually moved in together in 2017. Alex & Sherene are grateful for all the lessons they've learned together. Thank you to all our family and friends who have supported us through our journey thus far!
If there's anything Sherene loves more than relaxing on a beach it is relaxing on a beach in Tobago. In April 2020, Sherene and Alex were planning on traveling to Tobago to visit Sherene's family, but the pandemic caused for a change of plans. Alex initially planned on proposing in Tobago so he had to think quickly if he wanted to propose soon! He knew he did not want to propose in the apartment so he got Sherene on board with planning an "anniversary trip" once things started to get better. The “anniversary trip” was a road trip to Virginia Beach in August. It rained heavily on the first two days in Virginia, including their anniversary date. Alex woke Sherene up on the third morning to “have breakfast at a restaurant on the beach.” Alex offered to walk on the beach to a restaurant. Finally getting a chance to walk on the sand after being away from the beach all year, Sherene stopped to pose for a picture. Alex got down on one knee and here we are!
Like many of you, our year has been filled with canceled plans, uncertainty, and many challenges due to the pandemic and civil unrest. However, it's also highlighted what's most important to us - each other, our families, and our friends. We wish we could celebrate our love with all of you in person but we know smaller parties are most practical right now. Our wish was to get married in Tobago but with the pandemic and their border being closed it is easier to get married on the beautiful island of Barbados. We chose this island because not only is it as beautiful as Tobago but it's somewhere where Sherene's family can travel to easily. Additionally, Alex always dreamed of a destination wedding. Thank you for your continuous love and support! See you in Barbados!
