Sunset Photo

09.25.2019

I’ll share a fun memory of how Shelly asked me to marry her. On the air plane, Shelly told me not to have any high expectations. She told me she felt like she was not ready to get married - it had not been enough time. She needed to get to know me better. So I should not expect any rings on this trip. I accepted her answer. I did “dig in her brain like an oil drill” about what reservations she had in case I was wasting my time with her. Then we arrived in Croatia and a surprise sunset boat trip that I had not known about was cancelled due to the rainy weather. I was oblivious to this disappointment and thoroughly enjoyed running around taking Game of Thrones photos in the places where the show had been filmed. Then Shelly slipped on the rainy cement and skinned her knee. It was a bloody mess. We traveled to Petrovac in Montenegro next. Her friend Alex decided to take us on a tour of the town. Shelly asked me what constituted as a romantic place to be asked to be married and I snapped at her not to bring it up since she made it clear we wouldn’t be getting married anytime soon. She brought us to a grumpy man’s castle restaurant with beautiful sun set lighting. Alex walked ahead of us. I took photos. Then Shelly asked me to get up on the castle wall with her. “It will be a good photo.” It was only two feet wide and a very long drop but it would make a great photo. I hopped up and she then lowered herself onto her already skinned knee and pulled a wooden box out of nowhere. I was shocked and then I started crying. She asked me to marry her. Alex disclosed she had yelled at all the people to leave before we followed her up which explained why there had been so much space in front of the sunset. It was a glorious day. We ate from the grumpy Castle man’s menu and even his grumbling had no effect whatsoever. Alex threw her shot glass over the castle wall and yelled, “Mozal Tov.” I hoped the grumpy man didn’t see her. The day remains golden and glowing in my mind forever.
