Shelley and Jonathan first met as teenagers—back when AOL Instant Messenger was a legitimate form of communication and neither of them knew what they were doing. Jonathan was Shelley’s first real boyfriend, which involved a lot of excitement, a lot of nervous energy, and exactly the amount of emotional maturity you’d expect from teenagers. Life eventually pulled them in different directions, and they lost touch for nearly twenty years. Fast forward to adulthood: careers built, lives lived, and one unexpected reconnection later, it became clear that what they had found again felt calm, right, and surprisingly easy. Shelley worried she might overwhelm Jonathan with her extremely detailed and overanalyzed life plan; Jonathan worried Shelley might need time to adjust to a dramatic, furry housemate named Apollo. Instead, it all just fit. Now, they’re getting married—this time with a lot more confidence, a lot more life experience, and still the same sense of humor that started it all.
