Working at camp wasn't always a cakewalk, but it was my, Shayna, first job as a lifeguard. I chose it because it was a familiar place, but there were so many people to meet! A week after I started working, Elliot showed up for his summer job. One of the people I was friends with had a crush on him first, so I didn't purposefully try to be flirty. The lake needed someone to check in guests to make sure everyone was accounted for. Elliot took that job. As the lifeguards rotated places to guard, we also got 15 minutes of sitting out after one full rotation. I sat with Elliot because he was stuck at the entrance to the lake. On my last week there, I decided to be a co-counselor. The kids were a handful, they noticed that I talked to Elliot a lot. They teased me about liking him, even though I denied it. I didn't know it at the time, but they were right. I did like him. After I left camp that summer, Elliot reached out to text and call me. He cared a lot about how I was doing and was patient with me when I was nervous about talking on the phone. All that to say, we started dating long-distance the next spring and worked at camp again to see each other.
