Who could have imagined in a year when the world was thrust into a devastating global pandemic, face masks and stay at home orders became common household phrases, and murder hornets brought childhood fears to life, that two people would be destined to meet. Well, that is exactly what happened. Picture it, Kansas City, 2020. A young-ish professor decides it’s time to build a social life. To do this she downloads a few dating apps in an attempt to meet some new people. As it turns out, she didn’t meet some people; she met ‘the one’. On March 14, 2020, she was on spring break from Korean class, so she decided to casually scroll through a few profiles (mostly to remind herself of why she was happily single). As she was swiping left left left, she came upon a profile of a very handsome fellow with the kindest eyes and the most adorable smile. Of course, she thought he had to be a scammer or a catfish. But, seeing as though she had nothing else to do, she swiped right. She checked her phone a few times that day, but nothing. She thought, this must be an inactive profile or this scammer is gathering intel on her. She opened another app and much to her surprise the same profile was on there. Same pictures, same handsome face, same adorable smile. She swiped right again, thinking nothing would come from it. A day or two passed and nothing. It was one of the final days of her paid subscription on yet another app (1 of 3 total) and she decided to scroll a bit. Now, mind you, at this point she had totally abandoned any thoughts of meeting any one when BAM the same profile of the same pictures, same handsome face, and same adorable smile popped up. She thought to herself, what the heck and swiped right. Later that day or the next, she checked the app and to her surprise they had matched! They contacted each other and began chatting. By the time they decided they wanted to meet, everything was officially locked down so their first date was on Zoom and lasted hours (seriously, hours). The rest, they say, is history! And that friends, is how Shatonda met Tony.
