How It Started

Donna and Shaquille: Sparks to Soulmates

How It Started Their story began in 2016 at Coastal Carolina University. Donna was a quiet freshman who kept to herself unless she was with people she trusted. Shaquille was a confident junior and the organizer of a pageant hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Shaq noticed Donna first. She did not speak often, but when she did, her humor caught him off guard. Donna noticed him too. He carried himself with certainty, looked organized, and seemed like someone who had a plan. In her words, he was smart, funny, and handsome. They were friendly, nothing more. Two people whose lives crossed for a moment, unaware of what that simple connection would one day grow into. Finding Their Way Months later, Donna reached out with a question about joining ROTC and trusted Shaq would give her honest guidance. One of her first questions was whether joining meant she would have to go to war, a moment they still laugh about today. They started working out together. Slowly, workouts became conversations. After finishing at the gym, they would sit outside on the curb and talk about life, ambition, fears, and the future. Time slipped by without either of them realizing it. Being together felt natural. But timing matters. Shaq was preparing to graduate and be commissioned into the Army. Donna was still early on her college journey, discovering her own path. They were moving into different seasons of life, so they drifted apart. Miles Apart Years later, just before Shaq left for a rotation in Korea, they reconnected. A simple message reopened a door that had never fully closed. With a thirteen-hour time difference, their schedules never matched. When Shaq woke up, Donna was ending her day. When Donna woke up, Shaq was leaving work. Yet, they talked every single day. Their bond deepened quietly. There was no sudden moment of realization. It grew through comfort, consistency, and choosing each other even when life made it complicated. Together, Finally When Shaq returned from Korea in 2020, Donna was in her senior year. This time, the timing aligned. He asked her to be his girlfriend, and everything that once felt uncertain began to make sense. After graduation, Donna was commissioned into the Army as well. Duty placed them in different locations again, but distance no longer felt heavy. They had already learned how to stay connected, even when miles separated them. The Proposal On September 20, 2024, Shaq surprised Donna in her hometown. He told her they were attending another event, while secretly coordinating with her family to decorate the space. When she walked in, she saw lights, familiar faces, and the man she had always found her way back to, waiting to ask her to be his wife. There were tears. There was laughter. There was joy. And there was a yes. Now Today, Shaq and Donna are building a life together in Raleigh, North Carolina. Shaq is pursuing graduate studies at NC State. Donna is pursuing graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Life is busy, full of schedules and responsibilities, but they still make time for date nights and shared dreams. They are, before anything else, best friends. Their family is a team. Their daughter, Aureah, fills their home with energy and excitement. Ace, their dog, is affectionately known as the supreme leader. He takes security seriously, occasionally attempts an escape, and is adored by everyone. The Punchline Their story has never been about perfect timing. It has been about growth. About becoming the right people for each other. About drifting, returning, and choosing each other again. On June 20, 2026, surrounded by family and friends, they will say “I do.” Because no matter where life took them, They always found their way back.
