Question

Lucky Colors and Auspicious Symbols

Answer

Red and gold play a critical role in all Chinese wedding decorations. The color RED represent love, success, happiness, prosperity, luck, fertility, honor, and loyalty, while the color gold symbolizes wealth for the lucky couple. The Double Happiness symbol—composed of two identical Chinese characters meaning joy—appears in all Chinese weddings. Other auspicious symbols include dragons, phoenixes, and mandarin ducks as they denote happiness and loyalty.

Question

Why is there no registry? What am I supposed to gift?

Answer

In the Chinese culture, it is customary to give RED envelopes, 'lai see' in Cantonese, with money on the day of the wedding to the newly-wed couple. We will be providing red envelops on the day of the wedding. The color red symbolizes energy, happiness, and good luck in Chinese cultures. Wrapping lucky money in red envelopes is expected to bestow more happiness and blessings on the receivers. There are several rules to giving lucky money but the most important one is not give anything with a denomination of '4'. The word '4' in Chinese sounds like the word for death. We hope you will enjoy sharing this unique Chinese tradition with us.
