Even though we’re both educators in Boston, which is really just a small town, we met online. Serena was interested because Chris indicated on his profile that he appreciates a date who “asks uncommonly deep questions”; Chris was interested because he quickly realized Serena “texts in paragraphs,” clearly putting thought and intent into her words. On our first date, we had dinner & drinks down the street from the apartment we now share. It is now infamously known as Chris's “first bad date,” because Serena’s New Englander self was unafraid to engage in a debate (he says “argument”) about education, whereas his Midwestern self was used to more easygoing (she says “surface-level”) first dates. Serena walked away thinking, “He’s definitely not going to contact me again… Oops.” Luckily, Chris was wise enough to focus on the fact that we share a passion for important topics and texted Serena a few days later. When we met up again, we talked for hours (learning that we're both, coincidentally, pastor’s kids). Afterwards, Chris told Serena, “That's the most information anyone has ever gotten out of me on a second date.” And the rest, as they say, is history.
