February 2, 2014: Erica was making her way home from a ballroom team Super Bowl party. She had decided to cut out early because she was tired from teaching a tango class earlier, but she figured she should at least stop in on her next-door neighbor Becky who was also hosting a Super Bowl party. After all, she had made mini-corn dogs to help Becky out. As soon as she walked in the door, some boy came down the stairs and excitedly asked "Are you Erica? Did you make those muffin hot dogs? Oh God bless you they are delicious!!" For some reason, Erica thought this fool Kevin was kind of cute, and invited him to a salsa class the next day. And he said…no. Because he had to go to a UD basketball game with the boys. But when he asked her for a raincheck, she said…nothing. For three hours. Kevin nearly had a heart attack before she finally responded “I’d love to.” And after one Mexican dinner, one salsa class, five years of med school, three half-marathons, one cruise, four med school proms, and one family reunion in Ireland, Erica and Kevin went for a walk to the fountain on the UD green…
August 3, 2019: Kevin freely admits that he doesn’t remember much of the day before arriving at the fountain. One thing he does remember is texting his sister Lauren saying “She knows, she must! There is so obviously a ring box in my pocket!!” Lauren, crouching in the bushes near Morris Library on the UD campus with her camera and a mini-bottle of champagne, reassured Kevin as he walked with Erica down the green. As they walked Erica teased Kevin that this was exactly where and how she’d like him to propose, and that he must be practicing. When they arrived at the fountain Kevin took a deep breath to slow his pounding heart, and said to Erica, “Well practice makes perfect, and since this seems to have gone perfectly…” and he got down on one knee. He’s pretty sure she said yes, but it was hard to know for sure through all the crying and hugging. One thing they are both sure of is that they can’t wait to spend the rest of their lives together!
