We met through a mutual friend sometime toward the end of 2013. At that time, perhaps "met" would be too strong a word, so let's say we, despite all odds, ended up in the same circle of acquaintances, then nodded and said hello/goodbye as we zipped in and out of each other's orbit until late Spring 2014. Finally, over drinks in the Haight district of San Francisco, planets aligned, and life gave us our first opportunity to really pause and feel the natural chemistry that instantaneously and organically arose between us. Eric would later say that he was quickly drawn in by what he saw as my innate kindness, whereas I felt captivated by his intelligence and warmth. From then on, despite all odds and obstacles, we were hooked. Over the past four years, while our adventures have included galavanting throughout San Francisco, Gulf Shores, Atlanta, Washington DC and even Paris, our most meaningful and remarkable exploits have transpired in realms of our own shared creation. From Minecraft and Dungeons and Dragons, to sharing stories told in whispers cuddled up in our chaise lounge under a blanket, together, we build worlds of our own, founded on dreams, imagination, and above all else, a love so strong and full of magick, that we’ve decided to root our lives in it. We cannot wait to take this next step and see our little world bloom.
On May 19, 2018 as we strolled past "The Valentine" statue in Carmel-by-the-sea, a quaking Eric got down on one knee and asked "May I be your husband?". We were engaged! Afterwards, we walked down the beach, and I revealed my own little surprise: a guided tour of Tor House, the home of Robinson Jeffers, a poet Eric has long admired, and Una Jeffers, his wife. While I knew that Eric, with his poetic nature and unique worldview, somewhat resembled the poet himself, and that he would enjoy a tour, we had no idea how perfectly the visit would punctuate our engagement. The poet and his spirited wife were a model of lasting romantic devotion, and, as we learned, their individual personalities as well as their steadfast passion for one another, mirrored our own relationship in many ways. Robin built, by hand, a hawk tower for his love, while Una created an environment full of magick and wonder while "guarding his 'sacred quietness' like a lioness". Together, they created and worked to maintain a home built on poetry, curiosity, wonder, and love in a way that resembled our own special dynamic within our day to day life. The similarities proliferated, and we felt even more assured that we had chosen well, perhaps even, that fate had chosen for us. "To-night, dear, Let’s forget all that, that and the war, And enisle ourselves a little beyond time, You with this Irish whiskey, I with red wine While the stars go over the sleepless ocean, And sometime after midnight I’ll pluck you a wreath Of chosen ones; we’ll talk about love and death, Rock-solid themes, old and deep as the sea, Admit nothing more timely, nothing less real While the stars go over the timeless ocean, And when they vanish we’ll have spent the night well." - From the Poem "To Una" by Robinson Jeffers
