FAQs/Preguntas Frequentes

Here are some of our top tips for travel in Cartagena. If you have any other questions than what we've pre-populated below, feel free to reach out to either of us. Estas son algunos tips de viaje para nuestros invitados que vienen a Colombia por primera vez.
Question

How common is English in Cartagena?

Answer

English isn't as common as you might think throughout Colombia. Try to use some simple Spanish phrases to get around!

Question

Can I drink the water?

Answer

No. Faucet water isn't technically potable in Cartagena, and a lot of visitors can't drink it safely. Use a bottle of water to brush your teeth!

Question

What about toilet etiquette?

Answer

Please don't flush your toilet paper. It isn't a thing in most of Colombia! Use a trash bin; it'll be emptied daily in any hotel.

Question

What about showers?

Answer

Expect showers to be cold! Most bathing situations in Colombia don't include hot water.

Question

How is it to take a cab?

Answer

Generally, this is very easy. Taxis are easy to call and use. Just be careful with the car doors. Most cars in Colombia are very small and have lightweight doors, and the taxi owners usually own their vehicles. If you slam a door, it'll come across as an offense!

Question

Can I use car service apps instead?

Answer

Uber is illegal in Colombia. You can still attempt to use the app, but be wary with how you handle the transaction. Lyft isn't available.

Question

What's the Centro Histórico like?

Answer

The old part of Cartagena is really fun to explore. There are lots of shops, restaurants, and walking areas to take in. Just be aware that it's very touristy; people will basically constantly try to sell you things on the main streets (which are also pretty small). As Zack can tell you, there are also rapping performers who may or may not have called him Harry Potter a few times when visiting the first time.

Question

How's the street food?

Answer

The street food is incredible. Try everything! Some of our favorites in Cartagena are: -Arepa de huevo -Pastel de yuca -Butifarra sausage -Any juice (all of them are great)

Question

Where's the best coffee?

Answer

The street coffee is really good in Cartagena, but it's sold on the street in espresso-size styrofoam cups. Try Juan Valdez for your caffeine fix. We'd also recommend Epoca Espresso Bar.

Question

Is Colombia environmentally friendly?

Answer

Yes! Colombia is a very environmentally conscious country. Try to reduce waste while visiting!

Question

What's the socioeconomic climate like?

Answer

Culturally, Colombia is a warm, friendly, and rich environment. Cartagena is beautiful and offers many sights that attract tourists and have created a tourism economy. Be aware that there are serious income and wealth disparities between the rich and poor in the major cities. If you travel outside the main city you're likely to see very low income housing.
