Almost heaven, West Virginia... Harpers Ferry National Historical Park has it all, history, hiking, shopping, and dinning. The historic place is the site of John Brown's Raid, the 1862 Battle of Harpers Ferry, and many other noteworthy historical events. Today, the park is operated by the National Park Service. Scott worked as a ranger here, and he and Megan frequently go here to hike. Please note that some park programs and services are not available due to the ongoing government shutdown.
Shenandoah National Park features plenty of great hiking trails and iconic views. There's something for everyone here, from easy, winding trails to epic rock scrambles up mountains. Don't want to hike? A cruise along Skyline Drive is a great way to take in the scenery and the fall foliage. Our venue is located closest to the north end of the park in Front Royal Virginia. Please note that some park programs and services are not available due to the ongoing government shutdown.
This is a very historic place, it's where we met! Oh, and George Washington lived here. Mount Vernon preserves and interprets the complex and compelling history of the home of the first president. Tours and exhibits discuss the stories of George and Martha Washington, their many guests, and the people enslaved by the Washington family. The location also offers beautiful views of the Potomac River and is a great place to learn more about American history.
What's better than world-class museums? Free world-class museums! The Smithsonian museums in Washington DC have something for everyone. Some of our favorites include the National Museum of American History, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National Air and Space Museum. Pro-tip for our guests. The National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is located outside of DC near Dulles Airport and has some incredible aircraft, including one of the space shuttles. Please note that these museums are currently closed due to the ongoing government shutdown. We're keeping this information on here in the event that the government reopens this week.
One of the largest libraries in the world (and Scott's current employer), the Library of Congress is the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States. Tours of the Jefferson Building are available and offer glimpses into its architectural marvels, an original Gutenberg Bible, several exhibits, and stunning views of both the Main Reading Room, and the US Capitol (not included, a visit to Scott's cubicle in the Madison Building across the street). Please note that the Library of Congress is currently closed due to the ongoing government shutdown. We're keeping this information on here in the event that the government reopens this week.
Old Town Alexandria features great museums, delicious dining options, and plenty of shopping opportunities. Founded in 1749, Alexandria is a dynamic city where past meets present. Check out the Lyceum, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, Freedom House Museum, Lee-Fendall House, Gadsby's Tavern, and the Alexandria Black History Museum for glimpses into the city's history. The Torpedo Factory is a community arts space with compelling artworks. When it comes to restaurants, Chadwicks, Hard Times Cafe, Misha's Coffee, Tatte Bakery and Cafe, and 1799 Prime Steak & Seafood are our go-to spots. The waterfront offers a great spot to take in the Potomac River and people watch.
