We met one night in Bethany Beach. Greta was out with friends celebrating her birthday, and Scott was hanging with his crew. We hit it off, but did not run into each other again for another seven months back in Washington, DC. Greta was out with Claire (Scott's sister), and was secretly excited when Scott showed up to hang out. We began dating, and despite Greta's move to New York City a few months into the relationship, we persevered through nearly two years of long-distance and endless bus and train rides between cities. Of course, it was all worth it. Falling in love was the easy part!
We spent the Fourth of July weekend with both of our families in Bethany Beach, DE. We woke up at half past five in the morning to be able to watch the sun rise over the beach at Parkwood Street. What was meant to be a special way to start Greta's 27th birthday soon became much more. With just our pajamas on and two cups of coffee, we enjoyed our early morning together sitting in the sand. Just after the sun rose, Scott got up and walked to the water's edge. After a while he called Greta over, and she could see he had written something in the sand. It was not until Greta was standing just over the message that she could read, "Marry me?" scrawled in the sand. Scott got down on one knee, and Greta began happy crying (which lasted for a few hours). Afterwards, our families surprised us with a wonderful celebratory breakfast of champagne and donuts! It was the best day ever.
