Train

-

Above-ground high-speed trains run between all major cities in Italy (Naples, Rome, Siena, Florence, Bologna, Verona, Venice, Milan, and more). Between the major cities there are innumerable stops at smaller towns. Train schedules are flexible and there are apps to keep track of your tickets and scheduling. Official train tickets for TrenItalia can be purchased through ItaliaRail. Florence Airport to Florence Train Station: There is a tram from Florence Airport to Firenze Santa Maria Novella that takes 20 minutes via GEST tram (Line T2 towards Unita). You will need to get off at the second to last stop, Alamanni- Stazione Santa Maria Novella. Florence Train Station to Siena: Once you get to Firenze Santa Maria Novella you have to take a different train to Siena via Trenitalia for a duration of 1 hour and 45 minutes. The wedding venue is about 20 minutes west of the train station. The hotel is 20 minutes south of the train station.

Rental Car

-

Rental cars are attainable at all Italian airports and city train stations (Ex: Florence Airport or Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station). Driving in Italy is a fantastic experience, especially in the Tuscan countryside. Italians drive on the right side of the road, and road signs are easy to interpret. The only preparation required before traveling is purchasing an International Driving Permit (IDP). An IDP is easily obtained online (https://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpf.html) or at your local AAA office for less than $30. Holding an IDP along with your US driver’s license during your travels is all that is required to drive in Italy. Florence Airport: Car rentals are located at “Palagio degli Spini”, connected to the airport by a free shuttle bus that runs every 20 minutes. The shuttle bus stop is inside the short term car park, just outside the terminal. Firenze Santa Maria Novella Train Station: Car rental locations surround the train station, such as, Sixt, Hertz, and Car2Go. About a 5 min walk from the station on Via, Borgo Ognissanti you can find Avis, Rental Plus, Auto One, and more.

Travel Note

-

Taxi: Taxis are readily available around Italy. If you are able to have phone service you can download taxi apps, FreeNow or WeTaxi to navigate. You can also call +39 055 4242 or +39 055 4390. If you have no cell service there are designated taxi stands around the city usually congregating in major squares, popular tourist spots, and transport hubs. Uber: You can request a taxi via Uber in Florence, however, it is less reliable and more expensive as you can only request Uber Blacks.
