How the Ring was Won

Forged in the Fires of EMS: A True Love Story

In the dusty town of Fort Morgan, where the sun beat down relentlessly and the air smelled of cattle and everything mundane, there worked a woman named Raina. She was as stubborn as the patients she tended to around town. Raina had a heart as big as the prairie sky, but she was fiercely independent and even though many men would try, she had little time for courtin' and such. One frigid winter day, the town's new full-time Paramedic, Kyle, rolled into work. He was a tall, clean-cut fella with a smile that could charm a rattlesnake. From the moment he laid eyes on Raina, he was smitten... and even though she wouldn't admit it at the time, Raina thought he was wildly handsome. Kyle was determined to win her heart. Even though Raina was known far and wide for turnin' down suitors quicker than a tumbleweed rolls across the desert, Kyle was up for the challenge. Kyle tried everything to catch Raina's eye. While on shift together, he'd bought her favorite chai tea latte, told her stories of the patients he'd tended to, cracked jokes to try and make her laugh, and to impress her he even single-handedly carried an enamored old woman in distress out of her home so Raina didn't have to lift the stretcher... But Raina was still as cool as a creek in the winter, deflecting his advances with a quick wit and a sharp tongue. Despite Raina's resistance, Kyle didn't give up. He reckoned that a girl like that was worth the wait. He'd figured he would wear down her resolve like a river carvin' through a canyon. One afternoon, he caught the ear of Raina's Aunt Debbie with the single phrase, "I appreciate your candor, Raina," which he said as Raina was being particularly difficult. Aunt Debbie saw Kyle's genuine kindness and steady determination. She had a way with stubborn folks herself, so finally, she pulled Raina aside one evening. "Now, Raina," Aunt Debbie said, her voice gentle but firm, "This Kyle fella might just be the one who can match your spirit. Give him a chance, darlin'. You might find he's the grit to your grace." With Aunt Debbie's words weighin' on her mind, and Kyle's charm becoming harder to resist... Raina agreed to go on a date with Kyle. Kyle weathered icy winter roads to meet Raina up in the mountains where she felt most at ease. They laughed and talked under the stars. He spoke about his life and Raina listened intently. She saw a side of him she hadn't noticed before – a gentle soul beneath that handsome exterior. From that night on, Raina and Kyle were inseparable. They have danced the night away at annual barn dances, Kyle swingin' Raina 'round like they were born to two-step together. They have rode out far and wide into the hill country of Colorado to seek adventure, and they have cuddled up cozy by the fire getting to know each others hearts... With each passing day their bond has grown and their love has blossomed. In time, Raina realized that Kyle's persistence wasn't just about winnin' her heart – it was about showin' her that love could be as strong and unbreakable as the mountains she called home. Kyle learned that Raina's stubbornness was a strength, one that matched his own in ways he'd never imagined. Over Labor Day Weekend, they'll say their vows under the same sky where they'd shared their first 'date,' surrounded by the wide-open spaces that had brought them together and the friends and loved ones that have been there along the ride... And that, our friend's, is how the ring was won.
