About a 20 minute drive from Foxfire, Woodstock is a great town to stroll in with restaurants, thrift stores, and of course that 60s vibe from being the great countercultural festival's namesake, as well as the place where great albums by Bob Dylan, the Band, and Van Morrison were recorded, among many others.
Sleepy Downtown Phoenicia is a 7 minute drive from Foxfire - a small mountain town, it's worth a poke around.
Saugerties, located on the western shore of the Hudson River, is a half hour drive from Foxfire. It's a cute small town with good restaurants and cafes, and a couple of wonderful bookstores. It also has a walk to a beautiful historic lighthouse.
Created by pioneering artist and professor Harvey Fite and founded as a nonprofit by his wife in 1978, Opus 40 is a world-famous sculpture park and museum with 55 acres of meadows, forested paths and bluestone quarries — centering on 6.5 acres of remarkable earthwork sculpture — in the heart of the Hudson Valley in Saugerties, NY.
This is a beautiful, 5.5 mile, there-and-back walk along the Ashokan Reservoir about a 29 minute drive down Route 28. The path is paved and accessible and usually takes about 1 hour 50 minutes to do the full walk.
This is a moderate to difficult 6.3 mile hike with beautiful views of the Catskills mountains. It generally takes 4 hours to complete with a shorter version available that stops at Giant Ledge before continuing to Panther Mountain which is 3.2 miles and generally takes 2 hours to complete. Highly recommended, especially on a clear day!
About an hour drive away from Foxfirre, on the eastern shore of the Hudson River, historic Hudson is a great place to check out restaurants and to go shopping in the stores and boutiques along Warren Street.
