In 2020, a major event happened. You may have heard of it. When the Coronavirus shut down the world, no one could predict where their life was going to go. For me (Colin), it meant my last semester of undergrad and the first half of grad school was spent online. To help pay the bills, I started working a part-time job at the Staples office supply store in Williamsburg. Little did I know then how significant my lying on my resume to get that job would become. Saskia started working at Staples later that year after she had decided not to pursue a career in Northern Virginia, due to preferring staying closer to family in the wake of events stemming from the Coronavirus. She returned home to Toano and found a job as a sales associate. In a time when everyone was still wearing masks, it took a while for either one of us to really interact beyond casual greetings. Still, there was something about her that drew me in. Maybe it was the way she laughed and I could see her smile even through her wearing a mask, or the clumsiness (and thereby determination) she often displayed, I knew something about this girl was special. I asked a lot of people if it was a good idea to ask out your coworker, and literally everyone I asked said "no." But, we Edwards' are a stubborn folk, so I did it anyway. And look where we are now. Our first date was New Years Eve, 2020. In retrospect, though the date went amazingly, one's first date being 7 hours long is INSANE. But with Saskia, it all just felt so natural. We've been together ever since, and every now and again, when we drive past the Staples on Richmond Road, we silently thank that small red building for bringing us together (and for being an easy place for two teachers to buy more pencils!)
