Chesapeake Bay Fun Facts

The Wedding Website of Sarah McCall and Daniel Martin
Our venue is also home to the headquarters of The Chesapeake Bay Foundation. We loved the mission of this organization and are passionate about their conservation efforts. We started "officially" dating while floating on the bay and enjoying nature has been a big part of our relationship. Founded in 1966, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest independent conservation organization dedicated solely to saving the Bay. Serving as a watchdog, they fight for effective, science-based solutions to the pollution degrading the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. Their motto, "Save the Bay," is a regional rallying cry for pollution reduction throughout the Chesapeake's six-state, 64,000-square-mile watershed, which is home to more than 18 million people and 3,000 species of plants and animals.

The Bay is named after the Algonquin word chesepiooc, meaning "great shellfish bay

at least, according to most historians!

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States and the third largest in the world.

Every four years, an area of land the size of Washington, D.C. is lost.

Every year, new parking lots, driveways, roofs, and other hardened surfaces from development convert land in the Chesapeake Bay region from great green filter to hard grey funnel.

the Bay produces about 500 million pounds of seafood per year.
