We may be extremely biased, but ever since we moved to this neighborhood 9 (!!!) years ago, it's hard to imagine living anywhere else. Not only is there amazing food for blocks on end—including dim sum, matcha shops, Italian restaurants, and about ten million bakeries—but you're also steps away from the restored native dunes and coastal bluffs of the Presidio and the towering redwoods and eucalyptus groves of Golden Gate Park. Enjoy the characteristically quirky and colorful SF architecture walking down the many neighborhood slow streets while breathing in the fresh ocean air.
Growing up in the Midwest, Sarah never imagined she would eventually live just a stone's throw away from the ocean. And now she does! Ocean Beach is a lovely spot to watch the sunset / sunrise, have a bonfire with friends, or grab a coffee from Java Beach Cafe and be humbled by the almighty power of our world's largest ocean. Sunset Dunes is a recently created park utilizing the old highway, so rollerskate, bike, or walk next to native dunes.
During the pandemic, JFK became closed to car traffic and has blossomed into the perfect example of what a city park should be. Enjoy incredible art installations, public ping pong tables, and check out the amazing rollerskaters in Golden Gate Park. Definitely stop by California Academy of Science, a world-class museum and research institution where Sarah was a volunteer docent for many years. Across the street is the deYoung art museum as well as the observation tower where you can see a panoramic view of the city (for free!).
Back when Scott and Sarah first started dating, the Mission District was their regular go-to for amazing food, shops (e.g. Paxton Gate's amazing taxidermy and all the thrift stores), and hanging out in Dolores Park until the SF night cold made us scurry home. Historically the center of SF's Hispanic and Latine communities but increasingly gentrified, you'll find fantastic papuserias, taquerias, and shops selling piñatas alongside boutique shops, cafes, and bars, all along a backdrop of impressive murals.
