We recommend arriving on Thursday, August 27th, one day before the first wedding event, to allow time to adjust to the time difference and travel from Rome to Cortona without feeling rushed. We hope you’ll take the journey at a relaxed pace and ease into the weekend.
You can travel from Rome to Cortona by train, rental car, taxi, or private car service. Please note that the journey can 3-4 hours, so we encourage you to plan your arrival accordingly. Detailed instructions, along with helpful videos explaining the process, can be found on the Travel page of this website.
If you decide to take the train from Rome to Cortona, you can use Omio or ItaliaRail to compare train schedules and pricing, but we recommend purchasing tickets directly from the train operators, Trenitalia or Italo, through their apps. Please note that Italo only operates high-speed trains between major cities, while Trenitalia operates both high-speed and regional trains. Since Cortona is served by regional trains, you will most likely purchase tickets through Trenitalia. Please watch the video on our Travel page for a more detailed explanation of how Italy’s train system works.
High-speed trains travel between major cities such as Rome and Florence and are designed for faster, long-distance routes. Regional trains are slower and make more stops, but they connect smaller towns like Cortona. Because Cortona is served by regional trains, taking a high-speed train often requires traveling to Florence and transferring, which may not necessarily save time. Regional trains also tend to be more flexible, as tickets typically do not sell out and can often be purchased shortly before departure.
Transportation will be provided to and from the venue for guests staying at our recommended accommodations. Please let us know in your RSVP if you plan on staying at one of our recommendations.
Renting a car is not necessary, but you may choose to drive from Rome to Tuscany, especially if you plan to explore the breathtaking countryside and nearby villages during your trip. That said, driving in Italy can be challenging due to differences in traffic laws, road signage, and more aggressive driving styles. If you prefer not to drive, regional trains to Cortona are a great option. Taxis and private drivers are the most common transportation options. Ride-sharing services like Uber are very limited in small towns like Cortona.
If you plan to rent a car, check with your hotel or accommodation to see whether on-site parking is available. In many historic town centers, you will likely be directed to street parking or public lots outside the main area.
A few important items to pack include a valid passport, a European power adapter (Type C, F, or L), and items to help you sleep or stay comfortable on the flight (neck pillow, eye mask, headphones, etc.)
Tuscany in late August is typically hot and sunny, with daytime temperatures often ranging from 85–92°F. Evenings are usually pleasant and cooler.
Most of the wedding events will take place outdoors, weather permitting. We recommend planning accordingly for warm August weather and wearing comfortable shoes suitable for walking on stone and grass.
We are hoping to keep our wedding celebration as intimate as possible, so we are not offering general plus ones. However, because this is a destination wedding, we completely understand that some guests may not feel comfortable traveling alone. If that is the case for you, please feel free to reach out to us and we will gladly accommodate you.
No. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas throughout Tuscany. However, learning a few basic Italian phrases is always appreciated.
Most restaurants, hotels, and shops accept credit cards, but it’s helpful to carry some euros in cash for smaller purchases like taxis. If you plan to use a credit card abroad, we recommend notifying your bank or credit card company before traveling.
Although withdrawing euros from an ATM in Italy is one of the most cost-effective methods overall, you should exchange some cash ($100-$200) before you leave home. Check with your bank to see if they offer currency exchange services. Major banks and some organizations, such as USAA and AAA, also provide foreign currency exchange for members and may waive the fees. If using an ATM upon arrival, select your bank to perform the currency conversion rather than the ATM, as it typically offers a better rate. Avoid airport exchange counters, because they typically have very high exchange rates and service fees.
Yes. Tap water in Italy is safe to drink, although bottled water is commonly served in restaurants and available for purchase at supermarkets.
The center of Cortona is a charming medieval town filled with narrow streets, small cafés, shops, and beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside. Most of the town is walkable, though the streets can be steep and cobblestoned.
In addition to exploring the charming medieval village, other activities in the area include wine tastings, cooking classes, exploring local markets, and enjoying the stunning Tuscan countryside. For those looking to explore more of Tuscany, Cortona is also a great base for visiting nearby towns, like Montepulciano, Pienza, and Arezzo, all known for beautiful architecture, food, and wine.
