We met through our mutual friends, Sam and Laura (mostly Laura—but we’ll give Sam some credit too). Sarah and Laura had been friends since college and Olli was coaching the USU hockey team alongside Sam. Laura, knowing we had a lot in common, thought we’d be a great match and eventually convinced us to meet—though it took a little persuading. Laura planned a casual get-together with them and one of their couple friends so we weren’t completely set up on a blind date. We met at Prodigy Brewing in Logan (yes, we actually have our own brewery!) on November 26, 2022. The evening was full of easy conversation that ended with card games at Sam and Laura’s house. The following week, Olli asked Laura for Sarah’s number so he could ask her out on a proper date. True to his Finnish roots, he skipped the small talk and went straight to the point in his first text. The second text asked how she felt about snowshoeing and that he thought it could be cool to go under the full moon. Little did he know that Sarah is full of adventure and loved the non-traditional first-date idea. So, on December 6, 2022, Sarah joined Olli snowshoeing in Logan Canyon…at nighttime…where there was no cell service…on a trail no one else was on…with a man she just met. What could’ve been the start of a horror movie turned out to be the beginning of a love story. Guided only by moonlight, they spent the evening talking, laughing, and trying not to freeze their butts off. Olli had planned a thoughtful first date from borrowing snowshoes for Sarah to bringing lukewarm hot chocolate to enjoy back at the truck. From that night on, their relationship grew through late-night conversations, skiing together, a visit to Finland, binge-watching TV shows, camping, and walks with Luka. Their conversations and time spent together were intentional. Day by day, they moved closer to a love they both knew would last. On February 13, 2025, Olli took Sarah snowshoeing to the same trail they went on their first date, under a full moon again (although it was cloudy and snowing so we needed headlamps this time). At the place it all began, Olli got down on one knee to ask Sarah if she would marry him. After a few happy jumps and her head lamp bouncing around, Sarah said the easiest “yes” of her life. Just like their first date, Olli brought warm hot chocolate as well as a bottle of champagne to celebrate. Now, Olli and Sarah are beginning their next adventure together with a love that was prayed for and a commitment that is steadfast.
