Wine has been produced here since the 1890s. All 10 000 vines had been removed in 1935 by the son of the original Huguenot farmer, Isak du Toit, to end the decadent wine and witblits sprees. The owner of the majestic Sir Robert Stanford Estate, Jan Malan, started the millennium by putting back what was always there – glorious rows of vines producing the noble white and red varietals.

Founded in 1998, the Birkenhead Brewery started as one of the first craft breweries in South Africa. Initially based on the sinking of the Birkenhead Ship along our coastline, our beers are inspirited by the ferocious power of South African landscapes and the charismatic characters that are found here. We now produce five different craft brews with additional special brews as and when inspiration strikes. All of our beers are filtered and pasteurised, with a 9-month shelf life. At the Birkenhead Brewery we pride ourselves on creativity and quality, with each beer lovingly crafted, mostly by moonlight, in-house by our small team of expert brewers. Visit our WORKING CRAFT BREWERY and pub-style RESTAURANT & VENUE for tours, tastings and to take home your own draught or bottled beers. Tours of our in-house Craft Brewery are available on request through advanced booking, 11h00 or 15h00.

The wine was named after Raka, the beloved fishing boat of Piet Dreyer, proprietor of Raka wines. For more than three decades Piet has plied the seas of the southern ocean in search of the finest catch. The same passion has found home at Raka, where the Dreyer family now pursue the earth's bounty for the creation of fine wines. With the rich blessing of earth and elements, the help of a dedicated workforce, the enthusiasm of winemaker Josef Dreyer and the advantages of a modern gravity flow cellar, Piet Dreyer produces his award-winning Raka wines.
