Things To Do

The Wedding Website of Sara Thornbrough and Ricky Wilson
We're so excited to share a few of our favorites things to do in the area! Tamarindo is filled with restaurants, shopping, and activities all in one town. We also have some recommendations of other parts of Costa Rica we have been to if you plan on extending your trip after the wedding!

Tamarindo Beach Costa Rica

Tamarindo, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica

Tamarindo is known for its gentle waves, being one of the best places to learn how to surf. There are countless surf shops along the beach to rent a board or sign up for a surf lesson once you arrive in Tamarindo. On Thursday, July 9th, we will be planning a group catamaran excursion for those who would like to join! It will be a great way to leave the beaches of Tamarindo while taking in the lush coastline from the water. We’ll cruise along the shore, enjoy the beautiful ocean views, and have time to swim, snorkel, and relax onboard. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, and a fun way for everyone to experience Costa Rica together.

Playa Flamingo

Playa Flamingo, Provincia de Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Playa Flamingo is about a 35 minute drive North from Tamarindo. It is another similar beach town, but with less of the tourist hustle happening. We have stayed in this town twice before and loved it for relaxing and swimming. We highly recommend checking out the air bnbs if you plan on staying in this town, as the views are unbeatable. There are a few neighboring hotels but most of the time we ate at local restaurants or "Sodas" which are small family owned and operated restaurants typically ran out of their homes. Coco Loco was a memorable restaurant right on the beach that we loved. ATV's and other tours also operate out of this town. If you missed our catamaran activity, this is another great town to do it from!

La Fortuna

La Fortuna, Alajuela Province, Costa Rica

La Fortuna is absolutely worth the 4–5 hour drive from Tamarindo. From the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall to the endless activities—whitewater rafting, tubing, hot springs, horseback riding, hiking, and soaking in the lush views of Volcán Arenal—there’s no shortage of adventure. We stayed at The Lost Iguana Resort, and it was truly breathtaking. The drive into town can feel a bit adventurous since not all the roads are paved, but if you’re looking for an unforgettable experience in Costa Rica, La Fortuna is the place to go.

Liberia

Liberia, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica

We strongly recommend flying into Liberia (LIR) Airport, as it is significantly closer to Tamarindo than the surrounding airports. All wedding events will take place in Tamarindo, so we will not be renting a car for the weekend. Shuttles to and from Liberia Airport are reasonably priced and an easy, convenient option. Within Tamarindo, golf carts are available to rent and are a great way to get around, especially since parking can be limited. However, if you’re planning to explore more of Costa Rica during your trip, renting a car is a great option. You can either rent a car in Tamarindo or take a shuttle back to Liberia to rent one there.
