I think most people know by now that we met at work. Taylor was an intern. Sam was a new third-year resident, and both were in the same orthopedic surgery residency program at Wake Forest. No, it was not like Grey's Anatomy (despite most thinking it was). Both of us knew right away that our connection was different than anything we'd experienced in the past, but we were scared of the implications being in the same program. Some things are just worth it. For our first date, we planned to hang out at one of our places since Winston is a small town, and we did not want to be in public together yet. Taylor was working a long shift. Sam texted her during her shift with, "You are going to be starving. I'm getting us tacos. Chicken or steak?" Taylor was immediately sold. We talked for hours and never really stopped after that. Obviously, we still wanted to make sure it was real before telling anyone. We had to keep it a secret for a while until we knew for sure. We slowly started telling our friends, until one day, everyone found out (thanks Kyle). There was anxiety, relief, happiness, and some judgement, but once people knew how serious we felt, they understood. We will never forget having to call and tell our program director, Dr. Halvorson, that we were dating. He basically said, "soooo do you want me to officiate the wedding? Or why are you telling me this? You guys are adults and good people and residents. Keep it that way." We knew that was the Halvo way of giving us his blessing. And the rest was history. Since then, we've endured some really tough times, the toughest being Sam almost dying in a car accident (we were dating around 5 months at the time). We survived him being intubated in the trauma ICU, learning to talk again, rehabing with speech and occupational therapy, and the difficulties of transitioning back to residency after 11 weeks off. As expected, he didn't miss a beat and continued to become the amazing surgeon we knew he would be. That experience brought both of us and our families closer than we ever thought possible. We were in it for the long haul, now. Thankfully, the past several years together after that have been smooth sailing (pun intended, please continue reading for our engagement story). Finally after about 3 years together, Sam decided it was time to pop the question. Is there a more perfect spot to propose than on a private sailboat in Barcelona during the sunset? Apparently Sam didn't think so. It was the most romantic, special moment, just the two of us. We have leaned on each other throughout residency, visited many new places together, adopted a dog, survived living apart during Sam's fellowship, and grown together through it all. We are absolutely honored and overjoyed to have you all come on vacation with us to a city that holds a special place in our hearts in order to celebrate our marriage. We hope that you love Cartagena as much as we do, and we can't wait to see you all there.
