Learn all about the Lone Star State and Texas history at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. It’s right across from the University of Texas campus. The LBJ Presidential Library is also nearby on the University of Texas at Austin.
Wondering why there are hundreds of people standing at Congress Bridge at sunset? Over 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats fly out from the Congress Avenue Bridge almost every night from May-October. Austin has the largest urban bat colony! It’s a pretty incredible sight to watch the bat colony fly out from under the bridge.
For only $8 a day ($3 for Austin residents), you can swim in the 68-degree year-round natural spring pool. We recommend visiting during the week because the music festival is nearby and the area will be very busy.
There are several different ways to get into the Greenbelt. One entry point is past Loop 360 off of the Capitol of Texas highway. Hike one hour in and you’ll be greeted with waterfalls. Watch out for bikers as you’re walking on the path (this is a popular area for biking). I like walking on the Butler Hike-and-Bike trail boardwalk!
The Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, named for a former Austin mayor and his wife, is a natural gem in the heart of the Texas capital. The scenic trail forms a loop around Lady Bird Lake, a reservoir on the Colorado River, and is sometimes referred to as the Lady Bird Lake Trail or the Town Lake Trail.
One of Niri's favorite spots - an Austin institution where you can hang out outdoors and play some relaxed golf (all holes under 100 yards). Because of the festival, we wouldn't recommend going here over the weekend, but definitely worth stopping by if you're in town during the week!
Lady Bird Johnson’s Wildflower Center is the home to sustainable, native plant gardens and education, conservation, research and consulting programs. The Wildflower Center is always blooming with plants that are in season.
Tucked unsuspectingly in a suburban backyard in South Austin, is Vince Hannemann’s towering Cathedral of Junk. Some 60 tons of discarded items make up the skeleton and decoration of the structure. The construction of the Cathedral started in 1989, when Hannemann was in his 20s. Make sure to call ahead to schedule a time to visit!
Fredericksburg is about an hour and a half outside of Austin and has a lot of great wineries and distilleries to check-out. If you are interested in exploring the area, shoot us a message and we can give you some suggestions! Two of our favorites are Southold Farm + Cellar and William Chris Vineyards.
