Things To Do

The Wedding Website of Kari Samantha Sigmon and Zane Andrew Placke
Image: Still Life, Cornelis de Heem (1631-1695) This is the land the sunset washes, These are the banks of the Yellow Sea; Where it rose, or whither it rushes, These are the western mystery! Night after night her purple traffic Strews the landing with opal bales; Merchantmen poise upon horizons, Dip, and vanish with fairy sails. - Emily Dickinson Here's some of our favorite things to do in Austin, but honestly, there is so many great places to eat and drink and lounge. We suggest you stay the weekend and you check out Eater Austin for recommendations that can be tailored to you. If you like to find weird stuff in any city you're in, like me (samantha) https://www.atlasobscura.com/things-to-do/austin-texas.
Blanton Museum of Art

Blanton Museum of Art

200 East Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, Austin, TX 78712

Great museum. You have to see Ellsworth Kelly's "Austin" chapel when you go, of course! The museum is small enough that it would probably just take 2-3 hours, but large enough that you get a good experience.

Sour Duck Market

Sour Duck Market

1814 East Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, Austin, TX 78702

Really unique spot for baked goods, full meals, bars, and events with a big shared backyard. Great food!

Tiki Tatsu-Ya

Tiki Tatsu-Ya

1300 South Lamar Boulevard, Austin, TX 78704

If you want an all-out theme-park like / amazing decor / insane drinks tiki experience, this is one of the best I've been to. Take a few hours here to really savor the experience and get a few drinks (they are strong though!) to view the variety of cups and drink set ups. Very unique experience! Might be good to get a reservation. Here's a little taste from Eater: https://austin.eater.com/2021/9/30/22699042/tiki-tatsu-ya-menu-cocktail-bar-austin-open-photos-drinks-dishes

Zilker Botanical Garden

Zilker Botanical Garden

2220 Barton Springs Road, Austin, TX 78746

We love botanical gardens, and this one is right next to Umlauf, so why not go? Great for groups of various ages, and it will be a lovely time of the year for a stroll around the landscaped grounds/water features/etc.

The White Horse

The White Horse

500 Comal Street, Austin, TX 78702

If you wanna get truly Texas with it, this is our favorite spot for some live music and just backyard hangs. Very iconic Austin, TX if you're looking for a good no-frills bar with a little good tunes. We usually go when there's not many people, but I'm sure it's fun packed too!

Cheer Up Charlies

Cheer Up Charlies

900 Red River Street, Austin, TX 78701

Austin's queer bar and night club with vegan food, a variety of drink options (non-alcoholic included), indoor/outdoor spaces, and a ton of different events. It's very iconic Austin!

Barley Swine

Barley Swine

6555 Burnet Road, Austin, TX 78757

You will need a reservation and some $$, but if you are looking to really take your partner out, this is where to go. Probably not super suitable to vegetarians, but Zane knows it is one of the best restaurants in town, so trust him!

Kitty Cohen's

Kitty Cohen's

2211 Webberville Road, Austin, TX 78702

Ok, this place is pretty hip. If it's a hot afternoon, you can put your feet in the little pool. I truly do love this patio, and it's a great place to hang over a springtime beverage in the sun.

Allens Boots

Allens Boots

1522 South Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78704

Ok hear me out; if you have never been to a Western wear shop for real, THIS is the one to go to. Rows and rows of stellar leather craftwork with designs aplenty from roses to rhinestones. You have to also grab your leather belt and cowboy hat while you're at it. That whole street is sort of touristy, but really cute for vintage wear and just people watching and walking.

Uncommon Objects

Uncommon Objects

1602 Fort View Road, Austin, TX 78704

I honestly haven't been, but if you like weird old stuff arranged in a maximalist style, this seems like it could be fun to check out for you and me both!

Canje

Canje

1914 East 6th Street, Austin, TX 78702

We ate here and LOVED it. Something super unique and fun to try if you want food recommendations that might be not what you would normally expect. Named after the Canje pheasant, national bird of Guyana, Canje pulls inspiration not just from mainland Guyana, but from Jamaica to Puerto Rico, and all the islands in between. Traditional meets modern in this new age Caribbean restaurant that is the passion project of Guyanese native Chef Tavel Bristol-Joseph. Canje's menu explores the cooking techniques, ingredients, and many expressions of vibrant food across the entire region.

la Barbecue

la Barbecue

2401 East Cesar Chavez Street, Austin, TX 78702

If you don't want to stand in line at Franklin's, Zane suggests this as one of the top Texas BBQ spots in the city.

Micklethwait Barbecue & Catering

Micklethwait Barbecue & Catering

1309 Rosewood Avenue, Austin, TX 78702

Another go-to for Texas BBQ according to Zane.

Recommended for a nice and easy hang out.
