Parking in the UMLAUF parking lot is limited, but overflow parking can be found across Azie Morton at Wright Field or in the nearby Zilker lots, so it seems like there are a lot of free options! https://www.umlaufsculpture.org/visit Probably best to Uber/Lyft which are widely available in Austin. Either way, give yourself plenty of time for the Austin traffic!!
Have fun with it! Think garden party at night. We love to dress up and don't get the occasion to enough. This could mean sparkles, puffy shoulders, floral bowties, or just a beautiful cocktail dress. It will be an outdoor venue mostly, with a covered area, on 3 acres of land we want you to explore, so think about comfortable shoes.
While it is encouraged that you treat this as a fun adult night out, we understand if you are traveling with children. Please indicate the children you will be bringing on the RSVP. We will have a children's area in the Crenshaw room with videos playing and toys if you wanna bring the kids in there anytime.
We are planning a large charcuterie-style banquet table that is self serve to start after the ceremony and continue throughout the night. It should be plenty of good food, but not a typical wedding dinner, so feel free to eat before you arrive if you'd like! We'll try to include many different options for different dietary concerns, but think more like cheeses, dips, etc. We will also have a selection of beer/wine etc. and non-alcoholic drinks. Let us know if you have specific questions or needs.
Samantha's favorite flower is the bearded iris with its two different shades of light and dark purple. We are going with this to begin with and a sagey green, a little gold, and some baby and navy blues in there with a few dusky pink flowers. We are going flower forward, so think bold fun patterns.
The UMLAUF is wheelchair accessible by a paved gravel trail. They have one wheelchair on site that can be used by guests on a first-come first-served basis.
You can touch the outdoor bronze sculptures! They have been washed and waxed for gentle touching, primarily to benefit blind and visually impaired guests. Visitors are not permitted to touch stone sculptures, or any art inside. Charles Julius Umlauf (1910- 1994) was the sixth of eight children born to French and German immigrant parents on a farm outside South Haven, Michigan. When he was eight, the family moved to Chicago. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, he moved to Austin in 1941 when he became a Life Drawing and Sculpture professor at the University of Texas’ Art Department. He taught at UT for 40 years, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1981. Umlauf’s sculptures range from haunting expressionism, to detailed neoclassical realism, to lyrical abstraction. His materials are equally diverse: exotic woods, terra cotta or cast stone in his early work, rich bronzes and alabasters and luminous marbles in his prime. With equal facility, Umlauf sculpted family groupings, whimsical animals, religious and mythological figures, and sensuous nudes. See more about him and the venue where he gifted his work at https://www.umlaufsculpture.org/about. You can download their really neat sculpture guide in advance of arriving at https://www.umlaufsculpture.org/visit under "visitor tips." Taking from his variety of styles and subject matter, we are embracing the theme for a fun (and a little dark) spring art party in the garden at dusk.
Smoking is not permitted on grounds. Dogs (unfortunately) are not allowed to celebrate with us this time. Young children must be accompanied by an adult. Climbing sculptures is strictly prohibited. Touching works inside the Gallery is also prohibited.
