Alex and Sam met in April 2020 in a place we all associate with 2020, a group video chat on Zoom. Sam's cousin, Jim, started a virtual Dungeons & Dragons campaign for his family members while they were all stuck at home during the pandemic. He invited his siblings and in-laws, his cousins (including Sam), and one family friend, Alex, to play. Although their first Zoom meeting was unremarkable, Sam and Alex got to know each other over the next few months as more friends, Liz and Sean, joined the game and solidified a new friend group. In short order, the conversations during the virtual Dungeons & Dragons meetups became more about their real lives than the game, and Alex and Sam often found themselves sticking around long after the sessions to keep talking. In January 2021, Sam invited Alex and the rest of the Dungeons & Dragons group to a virtual party with her friends and immediate family, and for whatever reason, Sam and Alex started to see each other differently that night. Sam and Alex weren't the only two to notice their connection because Sam woke up to a text from her dad saying, "What's the deal with you and that Alex guy?" Later that day, Alex asked Sam on a date and the rest is history.
