Roanoke River Greenway
You'll find that a few of the other recommendations are in close proximity to this location, and for good reason. The Roanoke River Greenway is a great place to go for a walk or a run alone or with your pup, and you can even rent bikes to ride here.

Roanoke STARCADE
Hidden inside Downtown Roanoke's market building is a pretty neat arcade. There's a cover to get in, but all games are free to play once inside.
McAfee Knob
The quintessential hike of Roanoke County. This trail isn't for the faint of heart, but you're rewarded for your efforts with a 270° view of the Roanoke Valley. Park on VA311 at the Appalachian Trail parking area.
Dragons Tooth
This trail begins from the same parking area as McAfee Knob. While it isn't quite as long, it is substantially more difficult.
