Travel

The most simple and efficient way to get to Vieques is by hopper plane. We understand that everyone's comfort level is different with small planes, so for those that are interested we plan to charter a bus to take our guests from San Juan International Airport to the Ferry. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions about travel plans or accommodations.

Travel Note

Rentals and Hotels

We do not have a hotel block this time around. There are numerous rentals available on the island, as well as several wonderful, boutique hotels. The wedding venue is located near the town of Esperanza on the south side of the island – so you will likely want to stay closer to that area. We also recommend renting a house with a group via AirBnB, HomeAway, or VRBO.

Flight

San Juan International Airport (SJU)

Vieques is a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico, which will require additional travel once you land at San Juan International Airport (SJU). Direct flights to SJU are available from Maryland, DC, NYC and many other major airports. Once you book your flights to San Juan, you can arrange a smaller “hopper” flight to Vieques. The ferry is also an option (and much cheaper than an extra flight) but it takes about four hours to get there by ferry.

Travel Note

The Ferry

The ferry system is seeing continual improvements, including a small Catamaran that makes the trip from the dock at Ceiba several times a day. It takes around a half an hour on the Cat, and there is a larger cargo boat that runs several times a day as well–though the trip takes almost twice as long. Tickets are purchased at the ticket counter for $2. The schedule is constantly changing, and there are possible delays depending on weather, etc. It is currently running well though, and usually on-time.

Flight

The Hopper

Ranging from $85 to $160 per person each way between San Juan and Vieques. It’s recommended to fly to / from Isla Grande Airport (10-15 min / $15 Uber from SJU). Cape Air leaves directly from SJU Airport, but is more expensive. Total flight time will be about 20-25 minutes. There are no late flights to Vieques! Last departures from San Juan are around 6:30 PM. Check out Vieques Air Link, Air Flamenco, or Cape Air for flights. For more information on travel to Vieques see, below:

It’s not a walkable island, so if you’re wanting freedom to explore the island we recommend renting a jeep or vehicle during your time there. Taxis are available on the island as well. Transportation will be provided to and from the ceremony on Saturday, January 15. Alternative Car Rental Services: Island Car Rental Puerto Rico Vieques Car Rental

Taxi Information

You can also call (787)741-TAXI if you need a taxi. There are also “publicos”, or large vans that will be parked near the airport and ferry. They tend to be the cheapest option, but somewhat unreliable. I recommend calling the car rental service prior to arrival and making sure of availability.
