How We MetHow We Met

We both moved out of NJ only to fall in love with someone from NJ

Our story begins there, on the digital battleground of Bumble, where I swiped right into her life—well, technically, she swiped right into mine, and I thought, “Hey, this might be interesting.” But then, she handed me a wrong number, which, let’s face it, is apparently a rare diplomatic achievement in the world of online dating. I mean, who knew that was a thing? Most people just ghost or vanish into the ether, but she actually gave me the wrong digits—an act of guarded mystery or a sophisticated game of “try again.” Naturally, I was undeterred. I was told by a friend that my standards were so high I might as well shoot for the stars, but good luck finding someone who ticked all 15 of my core values. Apparently, I was aiming for the unicorn, the mythical woman who embodies every ideal I hold dear—patience, kindness, intelligence, a dash of humor, independence, and, of course, an unyielding commitment to family and self. Still, I was convinced that somewhere out there was a woman who could meet those lofty criteria, and I was determined to find her. Fast forward to that first “date”—which was less of a formal sit-down and more of an all-out adventure in Wash Park. We decided to walk, and I was thinking, “This should be simple.” Enter Walnut, our curious canine protagonist, who, in his infinite wisdom, ran straight into the stream like he was auditioning for a canine version of ‘Survivor’. As I focused on getting Walnut out of the stream’s icy embrace—because, really, who wants a soggy dog— Marina, quite literally, jumped right in. Not only that, she kept trying to shove her phone into my face, saying, “Look at my niece and nephew! Aren’t they adorable?” while I was trying to keep Walnut from becoming a drowned rat. Meanwhile, Walnut was happily making a splash, and I found myself smirking at the absurdity of it all. What started as a quick walk quickly turned into five hours—spurred by endless conversation about life, dreams, fears, and everything in between. It was one of those rare moments where time seems to dissolve, and all you’re left with is this incredible connection. By the end of that extended escapade, I realized I’d met a woman who met not just a few but all 15 of my core values—an achievement so rare it might as well have been documented in history books. She was the kind of woman with a deep, unshakeable sense of family and self, qualities often found in immigrants who carry their heritage on their shoulders like a badge of honor. It was then that I understood why my friend’s advice about high standards didn’t seem so far-fetched anymore; because, here was this woman, fearless, loving, spirited, and fundamentally aligned with everything I’d been searching for. The mystery of that wrong number was finally unraveled, replaced by the realization that some things—like persistence, honesty, and genuine connection—are worth fighting for, even if they start in the most unexpected ways. And so, from that awkward first digital encounter and an accidental swim in the park, our story only got better, proving that sometimes, the best things come when you’re willing to dive into the stream, even if it’s freezing cold.
