Not to be missed! This 3.5-mile walk along Newport’s pristine coastline will give you a waterfront tour of the majestic mansions, and an awe-inspiring view of the Rhode Island Sound. Finish (or begin!) your walk with a drink at The Chanler’s Terrace or a coffee and breakfast at Empire.
Located in the heart of downtown Newport, Bowen's Wharf offers beautiful nautical grounds to walk along. You can see the yachts and schooners docked along the wharf, while enjoying the sights. There are a variety of great restaurants (Black Pearl, The Mooring, Clarke Cookhouse, and 22 Bowens to name a few!) and local shops to check out, and it's easy to spend a good portion of the day here. We recommend continuing to stroll along Thames Street by the water for more shopping and food!
Just a short drive from downtown Newport, Fort Adams is a historic site and the largest coastal fortification in the United States. Visit this engineering and architectural masterpiece to see where the soldiers lived, enter the casemates, explore the tunnel system, and climb the bastions for breathtaking views.
Enjoy the majestic views of the ocean and Newport’s “summer cottages” along the 10-mile drive. Wonderful to see by car, foot or bike. Stop at Castle Hill for a lovely lunch overlooking Narragansett Bay. Continue on Bellevue Avenue past the mansions, where a sharp right and a left will guide you to Ocean Drive.
Our wedding is on the same weekend as the Newport Car show, and there are a number of events that are open to the public. The Audrain Automobile Museum collection is comprised of over 160 of the rarest and most remarkable automobiles in history, and houses fully restored vehicles ranging from the beginning of the 20th Century to modern day.
Some of our favorite restaurants in Newport! Castle Hill Inn - located on the water on Ocean Drive with amazing views of the Newport Bridge! Cocktails on the lawn at sunset, lunch, and dinner can't be beat! We recommend making a reservation for dinner, with first-come, first-served on the lawn. Clarke Cook House - wonderful for lunch and dinner. The main level and terrace are more casual, and sometimes has live music! Check out the Sky Bar for more formal dining. Black Pearl - great outdoor patio if the sun is shining and a cozy vibe inside. Best chowder in Newport! The Mooring - a classic seafood restaurant great for lunch or dinner. We love the calamari + lobster rolls! Pasta Beach - one of our favorite Italian spots in Newport, with excellent pizzas, pastas, and cocktails! Bar 'Cino - the best grilled pizzas and great Italian food! Stoneacre - excellent for brunch or lunch. We love the biscuits! Empire - one of our favorite casual spots for breakfast and coffee!
For our guests staying in the Middletown hotels, we recommend breakfast or lunch at the Blue Plate Diner or grabbing a slice at one of our favorite pizza spots, Piezonis. We also highly recommend visiting the original Newport Creamery on West Main Road in Middletown for an "Awful-Awful!" Downtown Newport is located a short 10-15 minute drive or Uber away. Ubers typically cost $10-15 and there's usually plenty of availability.
