PORT JEFFERSON, ST. JAMES and STONY BROOK Port Jefferson was first settled in the 17th century and remained a rural community until its development as an active shipbuilding center in the mid-19th century. In the early 20th century, St. James was a popular vacation spot for glitterati of the stage and screen, including Lionel, Ethel, and John Barrymore, Buster Keaton, Myrna Loy and Irving Berlin. Most importantly, the towns of St. James and Stony Brook are Bella’s childhood home; in fact, the Curti's house is built exactly on the line between the two towns!
