Ross and I became friends when we started medical school together at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in July 2018. We went on our first date in January 2019. Ross took me to "On the Square," a restaurant in Tarboro, NC, 40 minutes outside of Greenville. I was nervous for such a long car ride, but the second The Dixie Chicks "Cowboy Take Me Away" came on and we started belting it together, I knew I was in for a great night. Ross got me to try octopus at dinner too, and has been expanding my picky food tastes ever since. We spent the next three years of medical school spending the majority of our time studying together, but taking advantage of any time off for date nights, and roadtrip getaways! Medical school is way more fun with your best friend also being your study buddy.
Ross and I headed to Charlotte for a long weekend off from school for Easter. We always try to get together with friends when we are back, and planned to have a Friday picnic in Romare Bearden Park in Uptown Charlotte with our friends Williams, Tavia, Jess, and Mike! I didn’t have suspicions with this, because Tavia and Jess are always event planning extraordinaries! We ran into my friend from high school, Meg, at the park. Meg said she was working on urban shots for her photography portfolio and was taking pictures of skateboarders when we walked up, so I totally bought it! She asked if she could take a picture of us while we were there, and I never deny a picture opportunity. After one picture, Ross turned to me and said, actually this isn’t a coincidence, got on his knee and proposed!!! I was still in such shock that after he had said some very sweet words and asked if I would marry him, all I managed to say was “Thanks!," to which Ross said “I hope you mean ‘Yes’??" Of course!! We got to saunter around Charlotte for a bit with Meg as she captured our pure happiness in that moment. On the way back to my parents house, Ross told me his family was all at my parents house waiting for us! I said “Ah Yay!! I was hoping they would be here! You could’ve easily surprised me with that too!” And he said “Nah, I think we’ve had enough surprises for the day. Let’s not tell any friends just yet and spend time with our family!” This was a hard task for me.. but we changed and headed to dinner. Ross said his mom had set it up so it was somewhere I hadn’t been that she wanted to try in Charlotte. We arrived at The Morehead Inn. I walked in the door and we were greeted by a literal wall of our closest friends and more family! So he definitely surprised me again! It was the best night and I could not have asked for more. I am so lucky to have this amazing man as my fiancé, and to be surrounded by the best friends and family there are (and those who sent their love from afar)!
We are now currently in our 4th year of medical school at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, in Greenville, NC. We enjoyed more flexibility in our schedule while we were applying to residency training programs (does school actually ever end??) and got to travel for a busy wedding year for our best friends and hit a few bucket list travel places! Ross is applying to be a psychiatrist, and I, an obstetrician and gynecologist! We found out on Match Day a few weeks ago that we will do the next four years of training in Nashville, Tennessee at Vanderbilt University Medical Center! We are thrilled to start this next journey together and hope to have lots of visitors. We are definitely counting down until April 23 to become Mr. and Mrs., but also to May 6 for Med School Graduation, when we will become Dr. Ross Masters and Dr. Camille Masters! We are so excited for a busy yet exciting spring coming up, and wouldn't be where we are today without all the love and support of our people.
