John and Whitney met on New Year's Eve when John made plans to go to a party with his coworker. That coworker was Whitney's roommate at the time and is now a bridesman in the wedding. The connection was pretty instant, but Whitney had to drop some seriously flirty hints to get John to dance with her. They've spent every New Year's Eve together since.

On the seven-year anniversary of the night they met, John took Whitney by surprise when he got down on one knee in Jackson Square in New Orleans. It did not occur to Whitney that John was about to ask for her hand in marriage until he removed the cup of tea she was holding from of her left hand so he could place the ring on her finger.
