A Pandemic Love Story

Tinder Swiping

From Asia’s Point of View: Before I tell this story, there are some things you all should know: 1. I had just relocated from New York to Houston just 5 months prior 2. Ronald was getting settled as a new home owner [Yes, good credit!] in a home he bought just a mere ….. 32 miles away ! Okay, now let’s begin: The year was 2020. While half of us were fighting COVID-19 and struggling to breathe through a mask, the other half of us were bored out of our minds from being locked indoors endlessly watching the news and Netflix. So naturally, it was the perfect time to start dating [that was a little joke]. So, there we were on Tinder- a popular dating app where you swipe right on the people you find attractive. Hence our wedding hashtag: #SwipedRightforBright Ronald and I “swiped right” on each other [see photo in our gallery] on May 7th, 2020 and spoke all day every day on the app. It was here that we celebrated both of our birthdays together (mine: May 10th and Ronald’s: May 16th), spoke about the woes of furniture shopping, and protested against the injustices against Black and Asian lives. On May 29th, we decided to exchange phone numbers and Ron asked me out on a dinner date scheduled for June 1st since Houston businesses opened to 25% capacity. Ron chose a Thai restaurant (I love Thai) although I now know Ron could care less for Thai food. Still he ate it with a smile! To my delight, not only was he on time but he was also honest about his height of 6’4 [Tall girl concerns]. Being a gentleman, he showed me his driver’s license to take a picture of as a testament to him being an open book. So naturally, I took a picture of it and sent this to half of New York just in case I turned up missing- STRANGER DANGER. Over paper plates, paper cups, and plastic cutlery due to COVID regulations we toasted to “us”. After dinner and great conversation, we walked to our vehicles where we just didn’t want the night to end. But remember its COVID therefore not much was open. So, Ron introduced me to the leading lady of his life, his car Bebe, and we began driving around the empty highways of Houston listening to East Coast music and he introducing me to Houston’s Screw music. Remember, gas in TX was only $1.65 a gallon back then. We drove aimlessly for HOURS eventually stopping at Lil Woodrow’s to play cornhole and then McDonalds for ice cream. [ Yes, the machine was surprisingly working]. After we finished eating our sundaes in the McDonald’s parking lot, Ron took me back to my car and in true H-town fashion, opened my car door AFTER he leaned in for a kiss which I happily reciprocated. We use this date as the start date of our relationship. Ronald's Point of View WHAT SHE SAID !
