How We Met!

#goblue

After a rough freshman year at UMich, Thamara decided to "start fresh" her sophomore year. One of her good friends was involved in the Indian American Student Association and convinced Thamara to participate in the annual dance show. Enter Rohit, starting his senior year and hoping to participate in his 4th IASA show with his close friends. Unlucky for him, he got his last choice in the lottery and was stuck with a bunch of freshmen and sophomores. On the first meet and greet, Thamara arrives in neon purple shorts and orange tank top (Classic T, but also colorblocking was in). Rohit is intrigued, but also is like, "she's weird and from Kansas, aka the South." That same night, Thamara and Rohit both independently end up studying in the Union quiet room, so obviously they don't talk. BUT SURPRISE, they live across the street from each other. This led to many awkward three-minute conversations about school on walks home from the Union and dance practice. Flash forward a few weeks. Thamara adds Rohit on Facebook, and Rohit gets Thamara's phone number from a google document (student org tricks slash creepy Ro tricks). They have a heated conversation about which is better: Walmart or Target. Rohit also mentions Meijer to Thamara's confusion. After many random conversations and an unofficial date to Insomnia Cookies, Rohit asks Thamara out for dinner. But surprise (to nobody), Thamara doesn't realize this is a date, and says she needs to study (like, everyday.) Finally, Rohit clarifies his intention and takes her to a vegetarian restaurant because he doesn't understand other restaurants also serve veg food (lol). The rest is history! More than six years, four states, and multiple google calendar events later, T and Ro are getting married!!!

The Proposal

#hygge

Thamara and Rohit took a trip to Scandinavia to celebrate the finish of our graduate school adventures. On the first day of the trip in Copenhagen, Thamara and Rohit arrived bright and early (overnight flight) and got started seeing all the sights, taking all the pics, and exploring the beautiful city. Unbeknownst to Thamara, who's having the time of her life, Rohit was fixed on the clock: he had the ring in his pocket since he got off the plane, and wanted to pop the question before Thamara became suspicious (but also he was terrified he'd lose the ring). Rohit knew Thamara didn't like the whole public proposal thing. The day sped by, and each time Rohit considered popping the question, it was too public or just felt wrong. He decided to coax Thamara into grabbing a couple beers and hanging out at the Nyhavn canal to people watch. Rohit started talking about their relationship and blah blah, but Thamara kept interrupting because she thought they were just having a casual convo (tbt to when he tried to ask her out). But nope: he casually popped the question, busted out the ring, and Thamara was SHOOK (in a happy and genuinely surprised way). To much of her surprise, many of her friends and family knew this was going to happen, so everyone was READY for her to spill the news. To top if off, Rohit planned a special dinner reservation overlooking the Tivoli Gardens and Park (what Disney was based off of). Thamara and Rohit continued celebrating on their adventure-filled, coffee fueled trip through Denmark and Norway.

The Wedding

May 23rd, 2020; June 14th, 2020

After a certain pandemic forced us to delay our celebrations with all our family and friends, we decided to stick with our original plan of getting married on May 23rd, 2020! This was very much elopement-esque, involving a trip to the temple to have a short puja and get our wedding documents signed, followed by a photo shoot at the beautiful Loose Park in Kansas City. And a SURPRISE cake and dance video from our awesome friends. Fast forward a few weeks. We bought a house and happened to have a beautiful large backyard that we were able to use for our dream of an outdoor Hindu wedding. With immediate family and local friends in attendance, we had a BEAUTIFUL purple and gold-themed 2.5 hour ceremony followed by a delicious lunch. And most of you were able to partake through our seamless live stream!
