It is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. Also, according to the National Maritime Preservation Initiative and F. Ross Holland, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse "…still may be the tallest brick lighthouse in the world.” It is usually open to climb by appointment and its restoration should be complete by Summer of 2026 - just in time for our wedding!
"Graveyard of the Atlantic" refers to the waters off the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where thousands of shipwrecks occurred due to treacherous currents, shifting sands, and numerous historical and natural factors. This region is known for a high concentration of shipwrecks since the 16th century, with many historical wrecks like Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge now serving as popular dive sites and serving as important archaeological sites for understanding maritime history.
