How We Met

"I'm excited for the sushi!"

We first started talking online on a dating app called Coffee Meets Bagel. Sandra didn't want to open a dating profile again but did it to support a gym friend that was embarking in the dating app world, so she was hesitant about the whole thing from the start. But Rob was the first person that messaged, and we started a constant conversation. We connected over books and shared our favorite authors and genres. After a week of constantly texting back and forth we met in person at Sushi Sumo in Gardena, CA on December 7th, 2018, 8pm, one of Sandra's favorite restaurants; that was the only reason Sandra agreed to the date. A friend had asked her if she was excited about the date and her response was "I'm excited for the sushi!" To Sandra's surprise we talked all night and were enjoying the moment so much that we ended up closing the restaurant down. We don't know if it was fate or the great powers of the universe that were bringing us together, but we've had some interesting incidents or serendipitous moments that happened to us right before we met and during our first meeting. We're going to backtrack to those interesting incidents for a bit to a time before we knew each other existed. Rob used to work on Hawthorne Blvd working in Welfare Fraud and Sandra worked a few blocks down at Michaels making custom frames, but every day or usually every day Sandra would go to her gym on the same street only a few hundred feet from Rob's office. Rob had been invited to take a free tryout class at the same gym by his coworker, and he never did. Sandra knew the coworker and had seen him plenty at the gym. That was the universe's first attempt at trying to bring us together. The second attempt was on July 27, 2018, at the FivePoint Amphitheater for a Five Finger Death Punch concert. Sandra was with a friend and her brother; Rob also attended the concert with a "friend." We were literally in the same pit area, (general admissions up front by the stage for those who don't know concert venue lingo) a few feet away from each other and missed our chance to connect. But everything happens for a reason and at the right time. Now let's fast forward back to the first-time meeting at Sushi Sumo. When we were getting to know each other, on that first meeting, an older couple with a friend, complete strangers to us, were seated next to us at the conveyer sushi bar, (we were almost on the far back corner by the entrance to the bathroom for those friends that know the Sushi Sumo layout). At some point one of the ladies asked us how long we had been together, and we stated that it was our first time meeting. They were surprised and excited or maybe it was the booze speaking but she predicted that we were going to end up together and that we were meant for each other. They dared Rob to kiss Sandra right then and there. We smiled at each other, but we did not kiss. Now, 7 years later, we have been inseparable and each other's support system and each other's best friends, finally, ready to say, "I do" for the rest of our lives, till death do us part. The universe always gets its way.
