La Rioja is especially stunning in September and October during the grape harvest, called "La Vendimia." It's the perfect time to visit, these are some of our favourite towns to visit whenevere we are in town: - Haro: Known as the "Capital of Rioja Wine," Haro is the perfect place to start your journey. Visit its Barrio de la Estación, where historic wineries like López de Heredia, Muga, and CVNE are located, which organise bodega tours and have onside tapas restaurants. - Santo Domingo de la Calzada: This medieval town is famous for its cathedral and the legend of the rooster and hen, linked to the Camino de Santiago. The old town is full of charm, with its cobblestone streets and historic buildings. - Laguardia: A charming medieval town located in the Rioja Alavesa region of the Basque Country. Situated at the top of a hill offers stunning views of the region, and the drive from Zarraton is breathtaking.
Logroño, the capital of La Rioja, is a city famous for its gastronomy, rich history, and, of course, its wine culture. The whole region is known for its food and you will eat well everywhere but you cannot come to La Rioja without doing a pinchos crawl in el Laurel. La Calle del Laurel is known for being packed with tapas bars each offering their speciality pincho as well as great (and cheap) local wines.
If you are flying out of Bilbao and have some spare days we would highly recommend extending your stay to include a couple of nights in these cities. Bilbao and San Sebastian are key cities in El Pais Vasco, a region better known for its gastronomy, from local bars, family run restaurants all the way to Michelin Star fine dining places. On top of the food, they are both beautiful cities worth a visit, with Bilbao hosting the Guggenheim Museum, a world known modern art museum, and San Sebastian being a seaside town with Playa de la Concha a gorgeous golden sand beach in the centre of the town.
