Kevin and Alex went to Unami Middle School together, but were only acquaintances. When hanging out with Lauren Pinto one night in May 2012, she asked Alex if she wanted to go to Kevin Riling's house. Alex couldn't believe the handsome man he had become. He had changed a lot since Middle School! They all went out together for some drinks and Kevin asked Alex on a date later that week.

Kevin and Alex went out for Kevin's birthday in New Hope. After a dinner on the river in New Hope, Kevin asked Alex if she wanted to take a walk over the bridge and on the trails in Lambertville. They found a sunny spot on the water, where they reminisced about their relationship. Kevin then got down on one knee. Alex asked if he was getting his water out of his bag or needed to tie his shoe (babbling like an idiot), but with tears in his eyes, Kevin asked Alex to marry him.
