Just a short drive from South Thomaston, Owls Head Lighthouse is one of the Midcoast’s most iconic and scenic spots. Perched on a bluff overlooking Penobscot Bay, the lighthouse offers sweeping ocean views, peaceful wooded paths, and a classic slice of Maine’s maritime history. The walk from the parking area is easy and short, making it a great outing for all ages. It’s especially beautiful in early October, when fall colors frame the coastline and the light over the bay is breathtaking. Perfect for a quick visit, a photo stop, or a quiet moment by the water.
A must-see for first-time visitors to the Midcoast. You can drive or hike to the summit of Mount Battie for breathtaking views of Camden Harbor, fall foliage, and the islands of Penobscot Bay. An ideal outing for nature lovers looking for classic “Maine in October” scenery.
This unique lighthouse sits nearly a mile offshore at the end of a granite breakwater. The walk is flat and beautiful, offering panoramic views of Rockland Harbor and the bay. A great activity for adventurous guests who want something memorable but accessible.
While you’re in town, consider a scenic trip with Camden Harbor Cruises departing from Camden’s Public Landing. This classic Maine harbor boat offers lighthouse and lobstering tours, wildlife and eco-cruises, sunset sails, and narrated trips around Penobscot Bay where you can enjoy views of iconic lighthouses, seals, bald eagles, and rugged coastline from the water.
If you’re looking for a dinner spot while you’re in Portland, we highly recommend Via Vecchia in the Old Port. This Italian-inspired small plates restaurant is located in a beautiful brick and ivy-covered building overlooking the cobblestone streets, and it perfectly captures the charm of the city. Known especially for their fresh, house-made pasta and standout cocktail program, Via Vecchia pairs old-world flavors with modern technique in a warm, energetic setting. It’s a great choice for a cozy date night or a fun group dinner while you’re in town!
If you’re extending your trip and have time for a day trip from Rockland, we highly recommend heading to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, about 2 to 2.5 hours up the coast. Acadia is one of the most beautiful national parks in the country, with stunning ocean views, granite peaks, and scenic carriage roads. You can drive or hike up Cadillac Mountain for incredible views, explore the Park Loop Road, walk along Ocean Path, or enjoy a classic Maine picnic by the water. Afterward, spend time in Bar Harbor strolling through the charming downtown, browsing local shops, grabbing lobster rolls, or enjoying ice cream by the harbor. It’s a quintessential Maine experience and well worth the extra day if you have it!
If in Portland we recommend hopping on the short ferry from Portland over to Peaks Island. Once there, treat yourself to the famous wood-fired lobster pizza, a true island classic, and then explore the island at your own pace on a golf cart or bike, discovering quiet beaches, charming homes, and scenic viewpoints along the way (we like the counterclockwise loop). Wrap up your day with a sunset ferry ride back to Portland, letting the golden light over Casco Bay be the perfect end to a relaxing, unforgettable outing.
