What is a modern love story without a dating app? Hannah and Ricky met on Tinder a month into the Fall 2014 semester of Hope College. Hannah was a freshman and Ricky was a sophomore. After matching, Ricky made the first move by sending a pick-up line to Hannah. Ricky: Hey pretty lady! Hannah: Hi! Ricky: It's must be really early for only a 'hi' back. Hannah: Well, it's not too early to make me smile. And thus began Hannah and Ricky's love story.
Truly, Hannah did not see it coming. She had been expecting Ricky to pop the question soon, but not while she was working. Six years into their relationship and newly moved-in together, Hannah received an invitation to dine at Paddock Place in Grand Rapids in exchange for social media coverage. Hannah agreed to the terms and told Ricky they would be dining in style on Friday, March 12. Little did Hannah know that Ricky had a ring, had contacted his older brother, John, and their friend, Nate, to meet them at Paddock Place, and to photograph and film the surprise engagement. The dessert, a giant red velvet macaron, had just been served, and Hannah was photographing it when out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ricky pull a box out of his coat and and slip into a kneel. She can't remember exactly what he said - neither can he - but both agree, Ricky said something to the effect of: I hope I can distract you from the dessert long enough to ask you an important question. Will you marry me, Hannah Pikaart? Hannah tearfully responded with a 'yes,' and the two embraced and kissed while John and Nate took pictures and video in the background.
