Dancing in LaLa Land

First comes love, then comes the carriage, then comes a celebration of marriage...

It was March 24, 2017. Vy was in her Burbank apartment getting ready for a night out to celebrate her dear friend Nancy’s birthday. The party would be at Blue J Lounge in Little Tokyo in downtown L.A. Little did she know that just 20 miles south on the 5 freeway in Anaheim, CA, Richard would be getting ready for his first night out with friends since leaving his time in the Navy just a week earlier. As chance would have it, he too, would end up at (what once was) Blue J Lounge, at the very place Vy would be at that night. It was after 10:00pm when Vy arrived and the party was underway with bottle service flowing and a live DJ playing top 40 hits. It wasn’t long before Vy and her friends made their way to the dance floor. Then like a ghost in the night club, a random dude came out of nowhere and jumped in the middle of Vy and her friend’s dance circle freestyling. This rando was Richard. Vy and her friends exchanged looks of “who is this random drunk dude?!” But after further observation, Vy found herself impressed by his dance moves. And just as Nancy had always done when dancers hit the dance floor, she egged on Vy encouraging her to enter the circle. It was then that Richard and Vy first met. Little did they know that the impromptu dance battle would lead to forever, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Later that night Richard approached Vy and offered to buy her a drink. After some small talk, he asked for her phone number. She was skeptical and denied Richard a few times. Call it curiosity, intuition or liquid persuasion, but she eventually gave in and entered her number into his phone. The next day, Richard texted Vy asking her out to dinner. She was relatively fresh out of a relationship and very clearly stated that she was not interested in dating but was always up for meeting new people. Coincidentally, he was in a similar situation and agreed. However, he had to cancel that first date, then she was unavailable and things kept coming up. After several failed attempts to meet up, their schedules eventually aligned 3 weeks after their initial meeting. And in those 3 weeks, Vy had learned that Richard was 6 years younger than her, fresh out of the Navy, had a daughter, and going through a divorce - so many red flags. But they met at a restaurant in Alhambra, CA for what felt like a blind date having met in a dark club weeks prior but it was a first date to remember. 4 hours of talking about anything and everything. About heartbreak, Richard’s daughter, work, life, dance, music…everything. Just 2 strangers with no expectations or need to impress and surprisingly a lot in common. Then it was weeks of late night calls for hours, unforgettable romcom-like imperfectly perfect dates and then an unexpected surprise. Vy was late…VERY late. A pregnancy test later and they were pregnant. Vy paced her room for an hour processing and panicking as Richard sat calmly, listening while secretly freaking out also. Eventually Vy sat down beside him and he said, “Is it weird that I’m kind of excited?” Vy paused and took a breath. It’s all she ever wanted. Someone who wasn’t afraid and wanted a future with children....with her. After the shock of his words wore off, Vy eventually replied “I kind of am, too." And just like that, all of the initial red flags didn’t matter to Vy. Their growing baby, Elliot, had picked them to be his parents. And Richard was all in saying “I love you” after just 1 week of dating. It was a chance encounter of two strangers at the right place in life at the right time - post-heartbreak, with zero F’s to give and a desire to dance into a new, happier chapter in life...together. First comes love, then comes babies… Vy met Richard's daughter, Jazlene, shortly after her 3rd birthday during a round of putt putt golf. They were instant besties. Elliot was born January 30, 2018 and Olive was born April 5, 2021. They quickly became a family of 5 and lived happily never nappers. #2NGUYENfinityandbeyond
