Richard and Emily met at the University of Alabama in Huntsville where they both went to college. When Richard was a freshman, like many engineering students, he was struggling with general chemistry. Emily had recently applied to be in the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) program, which is like TAing or tutoring. She applied to be a calculus PASS leader, but there had only been positions available for chemistry, so she decided to take the job. Emily began working as a PASS leader for general chemistry for a night section of the class. Though she attended the night class, she held study sessions during the week and on Sunday. Richard was not in the night class - he had a different PASS leader - Jonathan (who is our officient!) However, Jonathan's study session times didn't work for Richard's class schedule. Richard decided to attend one of Emily's study sessions on a Sunday. Richard started attending all of Emily's PASS sessions (and some of Jonathan's, where he told Jonathan that he was going to all of Emily's sessions because he thought she was cute). Richard also came to Emily's office hours, which students rarely attended. Emily found Richard a little annoying at first, because she liked to do her own homework during her office hours. But working with Richard became very fun! He was funny, always asked good questions, and was very cute! Eventually, Richard got a B in the class and sent Emily a thank you email for all of her help - of the 100s of students Emily had, only two students had ever sent her a thank you email! After Richard had moved on from general chemistry, he sent Emily a text that said "Are you copper (Cu) and tellurium (Te)? Because I think you are so CuTe!" and he took her out on their first date to I Love Sushi in Huntsville. Richard and Emily didn't realize there were two locations. Richard went to the location in South Huntsville, closest to his house and Emily went to the one on the other side of town closer to her apartment. Richard ended up driving all the way across town to meet her. Fast forward to months later - Emily graduated from UAH and went to Indiana University School of Medicine to start her PhD. Richard and Emily were very sad that they were not living in the same town anymore, but they stayed together, getting the chance to visit each other more often when classes moved remote during the COVID-19 pandemic. When Richard graduated from UAH he decided to move to Indianapolis with Emily! They moved into their first apartment together, explored Indiana, (and many other places - Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, California, Illinois...and more!) and then when they were ready, they adopted their dog Jessa and she became a part of their family! In the summer of 2024, almost 6 years after they started dating, Richard convinced Emily that they should take a vacation to Huntsville. Richard proposed in the PASS classroom in the UAH library where he first saw Emily. They will get married on October 11, 2025 at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville which is one of their favorite places with lots of special memories! Emily and Richard are so excited to share their favorite place in their favorite city with all of their friends and family!
