After a harrowing evening drive up a mountainous 4x4 road, Amy and Richard woke up in the freezing cold September air to do a 14er! It is their yearly tradition and had yet to accomplish one that year and this was their last opportunity before winter hit. In the frigid air, they dragged themselves up the mountain in the dark without coffee or breakfast. They walked quickly in anticipation of the warmth to come from the sunrise. As the sun rose they could finally take in the heat and a few granola bars satisfying their growling stomachs. Only then were able to finally glance at Uncompagre Peak, the final destination. This climb was the toughest part but Richard could only feel the butterflies in his stomach for what lay ahead. They soon approached the summit and took in the majestic views at 14,321 ft. While Amy sat on the edge gazing over the San Juan Mountain Range, Richard took out the small wooden box from his pack and got down on one knee. Much like penguins choosing a forever partner, he pulled out a beautiful quartz crystal that they had collected on their first trip; Amy soon turned around and could not believe the sight in front of her eyes. Richard then asked "Amy will you marry me?" the question he had been thinking about the whole way up. "Of course I will" she exclaimed as she scrambled around the rocks to reach him and hold him close. The rest of the descent felt less like a climb and more like gently floating down on giddiness and for what lay ahead for the two of them, together.
