You may exchange dollars for euros at your bank before you go to Greece. Western Union Bank and WSFS offer exchange options as well as most banks with little to no fee. Your bank will often take the Euros you don’t use back for no fee, as well. This is the most economical option currently, There are ATMs at airports and banks in Greece. Each withdrawal usually comes with a 10%+ fee from the various international ATM fees that accumulate. You can take up to $300-400 (in euros) out of an ATM each day with a debit card, again for a fee. This is daily withdrawal limit so you can only take a certain amount out each day. You can bring dollars to airport currency exchange counters to change to euros, but the airport is potentially the most expensive place to do this. It is a good idea to have euros on you, but best to avoid or at least minimize cash exchanges going back and forth between dollar and euro. Many restaurants, grocery stores, and larger stores in Greece take American Credit/Debit Cards now, however there might be a fee with each transaction, depending on the type of card/bank. In general, they do not accept US dollar bills - only euros.

You can purchase an international data plan through your phone carrier and/or avoid/reduce charges by using mobile calling/messaging apps like viber, what’s app, Facebook messenger, or between iPhones, FaceTime/iMessage. These are usually around $10 a day for unlimited data, and often default to this service once you are over there, even if you don’t pre purchase. Wifi in Greece can be found in hotels, lodging, beach bars, and restaurants, however, it can be quite slow at times depending how many people are using it. iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Viber are all good options to communicate while using WiFi. When no WiFi is available, most International phone plans offer pre-paid daily or pay-as-you-go data options.
