We met when Rhea and her teacher friends decided to come to Chilo's Bed-Stuy on an unseasonably warm Friday in April. Elijah was bartending, and when he saw Rhea he uttered the best opening line ever - "Hey, asymmetrical haircut." The rest is history.
It was the first weekend in January, and our New Years' resolution was to go on more New York adventures. Elijah planned the first outing, to the New York Hall of Science in Queens. It was a grey, rainy day, and he bizarrely wanted to visit the Unisphere statue before we went to the museum. Rhea thought he was out of his mind but went with it anyway. Our dear friend Alina Lopez captured the surprise proposal in front of the Unisphere.
Rhea started a new job in December 2021 that only allowed legal spouses to join health insurance coverage. City Hall was booked for months, so we decided to get our marriage certificate in West Virginia while we were there celebrating Christmas. Some of our dearest family members were able to travel to us, and we were married in the courtroom that Rhea's grandmother worked in as a court reporter for 20 years. We were married in a coordinated hot pink jumpsuit/pink Nike Ambush sneakers, and then all had lunch together at a Japanese steakhouse in Beckley, WV. (Go look at the "Photos" tab to see the flyness!) It was a pretty awesome day.
