Metro Blue Line
We've used the metro from the airport all the time. Simply select the "Public Transport" option on google or apple maps. Take the Metro to the Nicollet Mall stop and walk across the Hennepin Ave bridge to Nicollet Island.
Rental Car

We've had the best experience with Hertz and it's right at the airport. Also, there is no underage driver fee if you have AAA. Make sure you put in your terminal (Terminal 1 or 2) as you checkout so they can have the car waiting for you at the right terminal.
